Fierce friends

• The recent alumni football game between Marion and Hillsboro actually brought us closer.

We were impressed with the alumni game between Marion and Hillsboro high schools Friday. It was the first such event in our shared history. The competition level was keen, but for the most part both teams played with pride and with class. In that sense, both teams are winners.

We’d like to see a rematch in two years or so. Marion administrators will make that call ultimately. Even though football is a competitive and emotional sport, we sensed a spirit of comradery growing on the field that challenges so many stereotypes about football players and spectators. We’d like that to see that spirit grow. —DR
