Extremes

At this writing?mid-afternoon on Monday?the WeatherBug station at Hillsboro schools just passed the 10-inch mark for rainfall during July. Given a TV report this morning about the wettest Julys on record, 2013 may have reached No. 2 on the all-time list. And the western horizon suggests even more rain may arrive before this day is over. Just now, the radio scanner indicates flooding is occurring in various of the county, which is hardly a surprise given the saturated ground after the slow showers that fell nearly all day Sunday. The water must go somewhere.

We are fickle folks. We have yearned for significant rain for more than two years. Now that it has arrived, and in this quantity, is the faint whisper of ?Enough!? already seeping into our collective consciousness? When it comes to weather, we are moderates. Encountering the extremes reminds us how little power we really have over nature, and perhaps our lives in general. ?DR
