Dry is good

An estimated 39 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Fourth of July holiday weekend, according to AAA. That?s a 2.5 percent decline from the 40 million who traveled in 2010. The small decrease is being attributed to sustained higher gas prices. But the Independence Day long weekend continues to be the busiest travel holiday of the year as children are out of school and families head to favorite vacation spots.

Meanwhile, nearly 11,000 people, roughly a third of all traffic deaths, died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes during 2009, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Before your celebration begins this weekend, consider this piece of life-saving wisdom, as spotted recently on a license-plate frame: ?Driving is safer when the roads are dry, but Kansas roads are safer when the driver is dry.? ?DR
