Collaboration

Groundbreaking on Saturday for a new athletic facility was a big day for Tabor College and Unified School District 410, equal partners in the $4.4 million project. But it also was a big day for the entire community?and perhaps for other communities across the state of Kansas.

The achievement was more than the promise of a modern arena for Bluejays and Trojans to play football and compete in track and field?although it is certainly that. It was more than overcoming an unfortunate detour through the legal system that may have cost the partners up to $800,000 in increased construction costs over the past 16 months or so.

Saturday was an achievement for collaboration, a common-sense approach for small towns where public and private schools can pool their resources to develop shared facilities instead of competing for them to develop separate ones.

Chalk it up as the first of many victories. ?DR
