To what extent should city government subsidize other community/public entities with its taxpayer dollars? That?s the question the Hillsboro City Council is discussing after considering requests for funding from Community In Schools and the Hillsboro Senior Center. (See story Page 6B.)

The two entities operate outside the responsibility of city government, but provide important services that add to a community?s quality of life. Both have fallen on difficult times recently?CIS with its Marion County Family Financial Assistance Fund, and the Senior Center with its week-to-week operations. In the days before the financial meltdown, when public budgets were more plush with dollars, the issue seemed less conflicting?although the question surfaced occasionally even then.

Cities one of three options: (1) divert dollars from projects that are under its domain; (2) deny requests from outside groups and organizations; or (3) generate more revenue by raising the mill levy or local property valuations. If you have an opinion on the matter, now is the time to let your representative know it. ?DR
