How many times have we said it? What?s good for Tabor College is good for Hillsboro and Marion County. So the announcement last week that the college had achieved record-high student enrollment for the second straight year is news worth celebrating. To put it in the crass perspective of the local business climate, one of the county?s leading employers has just achieved unprecedented production revenue. That doesn?t mean the college is rolling in money, given the challenges of generating private donations during in difficult economic climate, but the new enrollment record does indicate growth?perhaps sustainable growth?in an area that has long been stagnant. That can only bode well for the college?s future.
Of course, Tabor College students are much more than a commodity?both for the college and for the rest of us. The real value of the enrollment record is that the college and community has an opportunity to shape the lives of more young adults during this academic year than ever before. This is a privilege and a responsibility we should take seriously but gratefully. ?DR
