A good chapter

Another Marion County Fair is in the books, and this edition made for a pretty good chapter. Even before the serendipitous recruitment of Pride Amusements literally days before the fair began, the 80th Marion County Fair had a lot of good things in its favor. With the presence of a quality carnival, it was simply a more festive event for kids and families.

We commend the Marion County Fair Association board for its hard work. The introduction of an apple-pie baking contest, interactive booths for kids and a full Commercial Building added to the interest level for all participants. As always, the fair was a competitive highlight for 4-Hers, who brought their animals and other projects for evaluation and possible qualification for the state fair. And the demolition derby and fireworks show was again a crowd-pleaser.

That said, one wonders about the long-term fate of county fairs like ours. As an entertainment vehicle, traditional county fairs are hard pressed to compete with the myriad options available to kids and families these days. Can they be re-imagined? We?ll see. ?DR
