HILLSBORO- With a dominant victory over Bennington, 46-30, the Hillsboro Girls Basketball team punched their ticket into the 2A State Basketball Tournament in Manhattan later this week.
No. 3 seeded Hillsboro (20-3) will play No. 6 seeded Leoti-Wichita County (19-4) in the first round of the tournament on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Bramlage Coliseum on the Kansas State University Campus.
To get there they had to beat a scrappy Bennington team in the sub-state final in Hillsboro on Saturday. The Trojans got up early, 11-6, and built a sizable lead prior to halftime, 27-15. Hillsboro had no trouble holding the lead and cruised to a victory.
“I was very pleased with our effort all week but especially Friday and Saturday night,” Hillsboro Girls Basketball Coach Micah Ratzlaff said. “We defended at a high level and made enough plays on the offensive end to control the temp and the game for all four quarters. Our coaches have really challenged this group to buy in and enjoy the ride. We are excited to see how much noise we can make at state.”
Against Bennington, Zaylee Werth led the way with 22 points and nine rebounds while Savannah Shahan chipped in 12 points and five rebounds for the game.
In the tournament Hillsboro also had to beat Northern Heights in the first round, 56-15, and then Sacred Heart, 38-25.
Against Sacred Heart, they got out to a fast 14-9 start and built a 24-11 halftime lead. They held Sacred Heart to just 14 second-half points and earned the victory.
Werth again led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds for the game. Anlsee Brewer had eight points and eight rebounds as the next leading scorer.
Against Northern Heights, the script was similar and Hillsboro raced to a fast 15-4 lead and built a 30-6 halftime lead before cruising to a second-half win.
“Savannah Shahan led us in points with 17. Zaylee Werth was again dominant from everywhere on the court scoring seven points, eight rebounds, eight steals and seven assists. Kingzley Ratzlaff hit three 3s and finished with 11 points and five rebounds,” Ratzlaff said. “Kori Arnold finished with eight points hitting two 3-pointers.”
If Hillsboro wins their first-round match-up with Wichita County, they will see the winner of the No 2 seeded Berean Academy (22-1) and No. 7 seeded Hoxie (18-5) on Friday, March 10 at 8 p.m. The championship game will be played on Saturday, March 11 at 6:15 p.m. Pittsburg St. Mary’s Colgan (22-0) is the top-seeded team in the tournament.
