Shawna Johnson and Shannon Hoffer are the duo behind Marion County’s newest business S & S MedSpa.

Marion County has a new business opening this weekend that is unlike any other business the county has had.

S & S MedSpa is opening up in Marion on Sept. 18. The owners, Shawna Johnson and Shannon Hoffer are both Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). Combined they have over 30 years of experience as nurses working in the hospital setting. Johnson has her Doctorate’s Degree in Nursing and is board certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She currently works full time in general surgery at NMC Health.

Hoffer has her Master’s Degree in Nursing and is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She sees primary care patients full time at the Hillsboro Healthcare Clinic.

But what exactly is a medspa?

The International Spa Association defines a medical spa, or med spa, as a facility overseen by a licensed healthcare professional. A medical spa can provide services not readily available through conventional spa facilities as a result of the on-site licensed medical professional.

“Medical spas take a more comprehensive, medically-guided approach to treatments while simultaneously offering the relaxation and wellness attributes found in a day spa setting. The medical spa experience includes a consultation prior to any services being performed,” said Johnson.

Hoffer added, “Visitors to our med spa can expect to have a conversation first and hear recommendations for medical-grade procedures prior to them being performed. Med spas effectively address stubborn beauty issues and health concerns. Our medical spa procedures are used to address concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, and the effects of aging on the face.”

According to the pair, day spas specialize in providing services such as massages, waxing, and facials.

“Unlike day spas which focus on improving your outer appearance, medical spas provide medical procedures that are designed to improve the appearance for months at a time and also repair your skin, hair, and even metabolic and immune processes on a cellular level. For the first time Marion’s Main Street has both a day and medical spa to provide these services to the community,” said Hoffer.

S & S MedSpa offers all types of services.

“We offer neuromodulators (such as Botox, JEUVEAU and Dysport) which address fine lines, wrinkles, and prevent further signs of aging on the face. These can also be used to treat chronic migraines, bruxism (grinding teeth) and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating),” said Hoffer.

“We have dermal fillers which add volume and definition to areas like the lips, cheeks and chin and can treat deep lines that can occur around our mouth and nose called marionette lines and nasolabial folds. We lose volume in our faces as we age and dermal fillers add volume by injecting hyaluronic acid which our body already makes. Both procedures are safe and administered by trained professionals,” said Johnson.

They are also unique in providing IV (intravenous) Therapy at the med spa.

Johnson said, “This means we provide basic intravenous hydration with high dose vitamins and micronutrients that are 100% absorbed by the body. This means we bypass the gut which allows for full absorption. These doses are much larger than your daily oral multivitamin or supplement which in turn allows for a quicker therapeutic effect and benefit. This therapy is not designed to treat disease but to enhance and improve quality of life. Our IV cocktail recipes are backed by clinical research to address issues such as chronic fatigue, gut health, immune support (teachers, daycare providers or those suffering illness,) hair/nails/skin improvement (acne, dryness or post viral hair loss), headaches/migraines (prevention and alleviation), mood disorders (depression, anxiety), improve athletic performance (runners, bikers, golfers, etc), dehydration (GI sickness or muscle cramps) and the list goes on.”

There is also the option to have a condensed version administered as an intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. This is available to those that are short on time or have a strict budget. Most IV infusions last 30-60 minutes and they use a specially formulated numbing cream before starting the IV.

“We also offer a package for medically managed weight loss. We plan to expand our services in the future,” said Hoffer.

The duo are hosting an open house event from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18. There will be live demos, giveaways, discounts on memberships and services with champagne and hor d’oeuvers.

“This is a great opportunity to get informed, ask questions, and book a consultation,” said Hoffer.

S & S MedSpa is located within Signatures Salon at 416 E Main St. in Marion, but the pair is capable of being mobile and bringing their services to you for parties or events.

The services are by appointment only, which can be done by contacting them at (620) 381-7767, on their website, www.SSMedspa.org, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SSMedSpa or email at shawnajohnson@ssmedspa.org or shannonhoffer@ssmedspa.org.
