Low voter turn-out for Marion County still produces results

 

The ballots have been counted and the results are in for the 2021 Marion County Election results from the Nov. 2 elections.

There were only a handful of races that had more than one person running for a position.

For Marion City Council, there were four candidates for two positions. The two positions were won by Zachary Collett with 263 votes and Chris Costello with 217. Darvin Markley had 168 and Katherine A. Young had 60 votes.

Peabody City Council had five candidates running for two positions. Catherine A. Weems came in first with 124 votes. Lindsay Hutchinson secured the second spot with 86 votes. Kim Nellans had 69 votes, Travis L. Wilson had 46 and Stephen Rose had 33.

The USD 408 school board had two candidates for Position 4. Steven Janzen won with 492 votes while Katherine A. Young had 93 votes. Position 5 also had two candidates, Jan Helmer and Clara Sprowls. Helmer had 322 and Sprowls had 268.

The USD 410 school board had three positions available with eight candidates. Scott N. Winter was the top vote-getter with 339 votes, Sara Wichert can in second with 327 and Jessey Hiebert in third with 278 votes.

Goessel City Council had three candidates for two positions. Evan Esau and Duane Adrian won. Esau had 64 votes while Adrian came in just under that with 58 votes. Cynthia Gaddis had 24 votes.

Pursuant to K.S.A. 25-3009, two contested races from the 2021 City/School General Election were randomly drawn on Wednesday for a post-election hand-count audit. From each of those two races, one precinct was drawn. The races and precincts audited were USD 410 School Board at Large: Precinct = Durham Park/Durham City and USD 408 School Board Position 5: Precinct = Clark. The audit was at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4 in the Commission chambers at the Marion County Courthouse. There were no issues.

Numbers for voters were low. There were 273 early voters (including provisional). There were 107 registered voters who got advance ballots and 54 voted and returned the ballots for a 50% turn-out percentage. The Burns Community Center site had a 28 turn-out percentage with 61 out of 217 voters participating. The Florence Masonic Center site had 71people voting out of 387 registered voters for an 18 percent turn-out. The Goessel City Building had an 11 percent voter turnout with 109 voters out of 970 registered. The Hillsboro United Methodist Church site had 450 out of 2233 voters for 20 percent.

The Lincolnville Community Center site also came in at 11 percent with 59 out of 525 voters. The Eastmoor United Methodist Church (Marion) site had 318 people vote out of 2169 registered voters for a 15 percent turn-out. The Peabody Senior Center site had the highest voter turn-out percentage at 22 percent with 214 out of 955 voters. The Tampa Senior Center had the lowest turn-out percentage at 10 percent with only 47 people voting out of 449.

These are all preliminary results until the Canvass is done on Friday, Nov. 12. Final results will be posted after that meeting.
