Local sisters win Concerto competition

Michelle Cherenkov took first place in the Elementary Division of the Wichita Metropolitan Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition.

Vasilisa Cherenkov took first place in the Intermediate Division of the Wichita Metropolitan Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition.

On Saturday, Nov. 13 sisters Vasilisa and Michelle Cherenkov, students at Hillsboro schools, each won their respective divisions in the Wichita Metropolitan Music Teachers Association Concerto Competition. Michelle won the Elementary Division (grades 4-6) playing the first movement of the Haydn Piano Concerto in C Major. Vasilisa won the Intermediate Division (grades 7-9) playing the first movement of the Schumann Piano Concerto. They both played in a preliminary round where they were chosen to play in the final round of competition. The girls are daughters of Dr. Michael & Nina Cherenkov and study piano with Dr. Sheila Litke at Tabor College.

“The girls have worked so hard on these pieces so it was so exciting to have them both win in their divisions. God has certainly given them some wonderful gifts and it is delightful to see them develop those talents,” said Litke.
