Turnout low for April 7 local vote

Tuesday?s Marion County local elections saw incumbents fall to challengers in more than one community?but voter apathy was the predominant theme.

?Election turnout was very low,? said Carol Maggard, county clerk, with only 16 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

Marion County had 6,938 eligible voters with 1,126 voting April 7 in 11 polling locations.

In the city council race in Hillsboro, Kevin Suderman defeated incumbent Shane Marler, 108-45, for a seat from the East Ward while West Ward incumbent Bob Watson defeated challenger Dan Suderman, 80-45.

Delores Dalke was elected to a 14th term as mayor in an uncontested race that generated 19 write-in votes.

In Florence, Mayor Gregory Winn lost his bid for re-election to challenger Mary L. Shipman, 48-42.
