The four-day schedule of events kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with a downtown mixer featuring a barbecue-beef sandwich meal and live music by the Stuchlick Polka Band and 5-Man Trio.
The meal, to be served from 5 p.m. until the food runs out, is free with the purchase of a festival button. Bring lawn chairs to the 100 block of East Grand Avenue in downtown Hillsboro.
In the case of rain, the meal will be moved to city hall.
A full day of activities on Saturday begins with an airport fly-in and breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Alfred Schroeder Field in the west edge of town.
Also at 7 a.m., registration opens for the 5-kilometer and 1-mile festival run/walk at the Hillsboro Museums visitors center in Memorial Park. The race begins at 8 a.m. Registration is $12 before May 21, then $14 through race day. Pre-registrants will receive a T-shirt.
Hillsboro?s immaculate nine-hole municipal golf course is open for duffers of all abilities throughout the day.
At 9:30 a.m., the rest of the Family/Folk Festival events begin, including a classic car show and a German/Low Ger?man festival with music, museum tours, children?s activities and grilled German sausage sandwiches.
Tours of the historic Peter Paul Loewen House and the Friesen Mill will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At 4 p.m., the annual festival parade begins along Main Street.
In the evening, the Hillsboro High School All School Reunion for all former HHS students will begin at 6:30 with a banquet meal. Hour-long tours of the school facilities will start at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
On Sunday, the annual demolition derby will get off to a roaring start at 6:30 p.m. The event features cars built in 1980 and later. Admission will be charged.
On Memorial Day Monday, American Legion Post 366 will lead a remembrance service for veterans that begins at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park Circle. Vicky Schmidt, state senator from Topeka, will be the speaker.
That afternoon, the Hillsboro Family Aquatic Center will open for its second season.
Also on Monday, the community of Lehigh, located seven miles west of Hillsboro on U.S. Highway 56, will host its annual engine show, which includes a parade.
Family/Folk Festival buttons may be purchased for $5 at the Hillsboro Chamber of Com?merce and Hillsboro Museums. It includes participation at the downtown mixer and meal, museum tours and activities, the German/Low German fesitval, airport fly-in and classic car show.
