Local Lions noted at state convention

Hillsboro Lion Tonja Wienck received the Lions International President?s Leadership Award at the Kansas Lions state convention in Wichita May 29 and 30.

Wienck has used her leadership skills in various areas, but especially in her work with Leo Clubs, the youth branch of Lions, throughout Kansas.

Numerous Hillsboro Lions and Leos attended all or some of the events of the state convention. A concert by the Kansas Lions High School Band was a highlight Saturday morning.

Hillsboro band student and Leo member Allister Young, playing his trumpet, was among the 234 high school students from across Kansas participating in the band concert, which culminated 41⁄2 days of intensive practice. He was sponsored by both Hillsboro Lions clubs.

The Friday evening event, focusing on ?everyday heroes? serving their communities, was planned by Wienck. Her son, Evan, also a Leo member, was her technical adviser.

Hillsboro Lion David Vogel delighted the audience by singing songs about being heroes and serving others.

Hillsboro Lion Sara Grout was one of the ?heroes? featured because of her work with the Leos and leadership in the Noon Lions Club.

Also, John Unruh of the Hillsboro Evening Lions, was recognized for his dependability and faithful service.

Lions International President Al Brandel and his wife Maureen Murphy of Melville, N.Y., were special guests of the convention. At the luncheon Saturday, Murphy, a physician, shared stories and pictures of her involvement at Ground Zero immediately after 9/11.

At the Saturday banquet, Brandel reported Lions? efforts in China after the earthquake, in Australia after the fire and extensive work in India, Africa and other areas.
