Florence draws sizable crowd for Labor Day

Florence Labor Day climaxed with the annual parade that started at 11 a.m. Monday. Officials said parade attendance was up. The Christian Church of Florence, above, took first in floats for best theme, said Melanie Grimmett, treasurer of the Labor Day committee. The other first place award went to the Rumpshakers, which used a flashback theme to the Ghostbusters and Pac-Man, she said. In the best classic car division, Mitch Reed took first place with his 1956 Meteor Rideau, not restored, with 33,000 original miles. This year’s parade judges were Gerald Goddard, Rick Leshure and Johnny Branson. Grimmett said attendance was up for the vintage baseball tournament with the Harvey Boys, the Florence team, winning the game against Howe House Griffins.
