An inspection report from Professional Engineering Con?sultants indicated that relatively minor work would be required to repair heat damage to steel joists in the room where the fire occurred.
Meanwhile, Wray Roofing of Newton had submitted a bid of $90,625 to repair damage to the roof.
?We are at a crossroads where we have to decide whether we are going to repair that building or we are not,? Dalke said.
She noted the building has become ?a true incubator building for our town? in that it has served the operation of five different businesses, as well housing the local police department and one of the firetrucks.
In the discussion that ensued, the council seemed to lean toward making the repairs so that if an overture was made to develop portions of the building, either by the school district or by another party, it would be ready for use.
The council will review its budget prior to making a decision about repairs as well as insuring the structure.
The council agreed to send a plat for the newly named ?Hills?boro Business Park? to the Develop?ment and Planning Commission for review and a recommendation.
City Engineer Bob Previtera of Reiss & Goodness Engineers presented the plat for a commercial development proposed for city-owned land north of the AMPI building and east of Ash Street along U.S Highway 56.
The council agreed if the commission recommends approving the plat and the council concurs, the plat would be filed but no work would be done to actually develop the property until a formal request was submitted by a potential tenant.
Dalke reported the plans to locate a new business on that property, proposed earlier in the year by Hillsboro businessman Albert Reimer, have been put on hold because of health issues.
In other business, the council:
n discussed but did not decide whether the city or the project developer is responsible to design and pay for sidewalk and curb work being proposed along the 100 block of South Washington and the 200 block of East Grand.
The sidewalk and curbing would replace the existing concrete that was ruined during the demolition and removal of the former Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church building and former Vogt?s store building.
n deferred action on whether to proceed with improvements along North Ash until reviewing the city?s capital-improvement priorities for the rest of 2007.
n set 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, as the date for a public hearing regarding a Community Develop?ment Block Grant application for a water-line project for South Birch Street.
