Celebration to mark 50th year of Loewen house relocation


The historic Peter Paul Loewen House, known for years as the Adobe House, was moved to Hillsboro in 1958. The Friends of the Museum are marking the 50th anniversary this weekend.

An all-day celebration is planned for Saturday, Oct. 18, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of moving the Peter Paul Loewen House to Hillsboro.

Events for all ages are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mennonite Settlement Museum at D and Ash streets, Tabor College?s Historic Church and the Scout House.

The anniversary celebration is being planned by Friends of the Museums.

Saturday?s schedule includes the following activities:

n 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. ? Vintage Quilt Show sponsored by the local quilt guild at the Historic Church, tours and family re-enactment at the Peter Paul Loewen House and Visitors? Center Gift Shop open for books and souvenirs.

n 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. ? German Choir and family feature ?From Wheat to Bread? by Mary Beth Bowers of Marion in Kreutziger School House.

n 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. ? ?Peter Paul Loewen Family in Mennonite History? by Peggy Goertzen of Hillsboro in Scout House.

n 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. ?? ?Aprons through the Decades? by Carolyn Stucky of Inman in Scout House.

n Noon to 1:30 p.m. ? Faspa Meal in Scout House.

n 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. ? ?The 1874 Migration Wave? by Connie Isaac in the Peter Paul Loewen barn.

The Peter Paul Loewen House, a combined house-barn structure, was built in 1876 in the village of Hoffnungstal.

Now part of the Mennonite Settlement Museums, the structure houses artifacts and others aspects of life from Mennonite immigrants in western Marion County.

All events are free except for the faspa, which is $5. Call the 620-947-3775 to make meal reservations.
