Trudy Hein, a sixth-grader at Hillsboro Middle School, won first place out of 627 sixth-grader entries in the statewide “Happy Birthday, Kansas” photo contest. Her winning photo was taken during wheat harvest at her grandparents’ house north of Hillsboro. Trudy received an iPad as her prize. Her parents, Kerry and Rachel Hein, and their three daughters attended the awards ceremony at the Kansas State Capitol, where Gov. Sam Brownback spoke, followed by birthday cake for Kansas’ 157th birthday celebration. What makes Trudy’s achievement even more remarkable is that her sister, Nora, won second-place as a third-grader last year in the same contest, which is sponsored by the Kansas Historical Society. Nora received a Kindle for being the runner-up. The contest is open to students from first grade through 12th grade.
