VEXing competition

FocusingTwenty-four teams from six high schools in Kansas and Missouri gathered Saturday at the Hutchinson Mall for a championship VEX Robotics competition. Hillsboro High School organized the event with help from ESSDACK, an educational service center based in the mall. The teams squared off against each for a game called ?Toss Up,? where opposing alliances try to outscore each other. To score, robots can ?push? the small and large balls within the arena into scoring zones. They also can stash the balls in or on designated goals. Results were unavailable at press time. In these photos (clockwise from lower left), Marion teammates Clint Kroupa (left) and Hikaru Kiki?vi?kura give their robots on last inspection; Hillsboro?s Ty Carey offers a last word of advice to teammate River Cecil before the start of their match, and HHS participants (from left) Reece Berens, Layne Heiser, RobotMary Leihy and Destiny Sharp concentrate in the midst of battle.
