Vassar booked for Chingawassa Days

Phil VassarThe Chingawassa Days committee announced last week that country star Phil Vassar will be the headline act Saturday night when the annual festival takes center stage June 3-5 in Marion.

Sheila Hett, of Chingawassa Steering Committee, said the group is excited about Vassar.

?It?s an understatement to say we look forward to welcoming Phil and his band to Marion in June,? she said.

Vassar?s hits include: ?Just Another Day in Paradise,? ?Six-Pack Summer,? ?That?s When I Love You,? and ?Carlene.?

Vassar?s signature songs include 10 No. 1 singles and 26 top 40 hits, Hett said.

In a recent press release, Vassar stated: ?It?s important for a song to carry a message and make the listener feel something.?

The 51-year-old artist was born in Lynchburg, Va., and started as a songwriter in the late 1990s. Vassar signed his first recording contract in 1999 and debuted his single, ?Carlene.?

Hett said Vassar also has contributed to the hits of many of his peers, such as Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson and JoDee Messina.

Organizers for this year?s event also announced its main act for Friday night, June 3. Lindsay Ell, 26, is a Canadian country singer, songwriter and guitarist from Calgary. Her music incorporates rock, blues and pop within the country genre.

In addition to the talented entertainers, the committee will keep the focus on family with many events for children of all ages. As in past years, the event will be at Central Park with many of the same games, but also newer activities.

The tentative schedule includes a horseshoe pitch tournament, bed races, children?s bike races, bingo, rock-paper-scissors tournament, Dinky Duck races to name a few.

Hett said the committee, will continue to release information as it becomes available prior to the event.
