Two local youth pedal their way to nationals

Charlotte Silhan and Kyle Epp proudly hold the trophies they won Sept. 11 at the Kansas State Fair. They duo qualified for the National Pedal Pull Championships in Mitchell, S.D., by placing among the top two competitors in the 4-year-old division.<p>By finishing among the top two in their age category at the Kansas State Fair, two Hillsboro youth qualified for the National Pedal Pull Championships at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D., Sept. 24.

Kyle Epp, 4-year-old son of David and Jennifer Epp, and Charlotte Silhan, 4-year-old daughter of Fred and Staci Silhan earned the right to move on Sept. 11 at Hutchin­son.

Kyle claimed first place with two full pulls. Accord­ing to his father, Kyle has never had anything but a full pull in his qualifying competitions. Kyle pulled twice to complete a tie-breaker.

Charlotte took second place in the 4-year-old girls’ division, with a pull of 26 feet, 2 inches.

Kyle’s older brother, Lincoln, and Charlotte’s older brother, Thurston, competed at the state event in the boys’ 6-year-old division. The Epp brothers qualified for the state fair at the Marion County Fair and the Silhan children qualified at both Redneck in Ramona and Goessel Threshing Days.
