Marion County included in state burn ban for April

Marion County is one of 16 counties included in a state-mandated burn ban in 16 counties through at least April, according to local and state officials.

The ban will not restrict burning of pasture crops or burning for the management of wildlife or watershed management.

Open-burn permits will not be issued this month and no current permit holders will be allowed to conduct them, officials stated. At this time, open burns are expected to resume after April 30.

The ban restricts burning of any waste, including vegetation, wood, structures and other material on any premises.

State officials also state that those with valid burn permits should call 911 before starting a burn.

The other counties in the ban are Sedgwick, Butler, Chase, Chautauqua, Cowley, Elk, Geary, Greenwood, Johnson, Lyon, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley, Wabaunsee and Wyandotte.

An official with the Kansas Adjutant General?s office said April 5 rangeland fires destroyed two homes, one mobile home and some eight outbuildings.

The day?s powerful winds contributed to a 100-mile-wide dust storm in the Texas Panhandle with winds of up to 60 mph spreading dirt picked up from Colorado and Kansas, according to the a spokes?person with the AG?s office.
