Heading for the homestretch

The eight finalists for the 200-meter dash round the bend toward the finish line during the James Thomas Invitational Friday at Joel H. Wiens Stadium in Hillsboro. The winner of the race was Nick Deterding of Smoky Valley (third from the right). Also pictured are area

runners Mitchell Day of Hillsboro (far left) and Andrew Sheffler of Peabody-Burns (far right), who placed sixth and seventh, respectively. In addition to each other, the athletes from the 12 competing schools had to battle 40-plus mph south winds. The winds were so strong that meet officials deemed it to be unsafe to offer the pole-vault competition this year. For a report of the meet, see Page 1B.
