Careening car damages garage, house

A Hillsboro woman, leaving the Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church parking lot Monday afternoon, unintentionally drove her car into a garage across the street, damaging the corner of the structure.

Juanita Harrison, 49, driving a 1987 white Pontiac 6000, told Hillsboro Assistant Police Chief Jessey Hiebert that she was pulling out of the church lot, hit a bump and then hit the garage.

The mishap was initially called in at 1:50 p.m., Hiebert said, but when he arrived on scene he saw that nobody was hurt.

?The corner that was hit took out the main support holding the roof,? he said.

Hillsboro Fire Chief Ben Steketee said they used rescue equipment to support the damaged corner until a proper fix could be completed.

?Jake Wiebe of Wiebe Construction was already at Marvin?s house putting in a new front door, but the project switched after the car hit the garage,? he said.

In addition to the structural damage, a freezer inside the garage was hit and Wiebe?s ladder, which had been in the garage, was also bent.

Because Wiebe Construction was working on the front door, the garage door, which normally would have been closed, was open, otherwise it would have been damaged as well, he said.

At first glance, Steketee said, it didn?t appear there was a lot of damage to the house itself, but when they went inside the garage, the entire north wall was off the foundation.

?The only thing holding up that side was a 2-by-4 and it was barely holding,? Steketee said.

The impact also caused structural damage to the roof and trusses, he said.

Harrison?s vehicle had minimal damage, Hiebert said. The estimated damage to Funk?s home was unavailable at press time.
