Hillsboro High School football coaches and players were hard at it by 6 a.m. Monday as they joined high school athletes participating in fall sports across the state for the first sanctioned practice of the 2011 season. About 35 athletes turned out for the first of two workouts that morning at Joel H. Wiens Stadium. The players will practice without pads for the first three days. In addition to physical conditioning, the Trojan coaches worked on fundamentals during the first session.

Hillsboro?s first football game of the season will be Sept. 2 at Halstead. The HHS?volleyball team, which began its first practice at 12:01 a.m. Monday, will be the first Trojan team to face live competition when it travels to Kingman Saturday, Aug. 27, for the Central Kansas League preseason tournament.
