A place where the elk and bison intermingle

WildlifeThe bison and elk were the stars of a public tour at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge north of Canton. The annual tour, now in its 20th year, was hosted by the Friends of Maxwell this Saturday and a week earlier. The sunshine and mild winter weather drew enough people to fill a partially enclosed tram for three hourly tours. In fact, Saturday?s tour had a waiting list of 75 people, according to Betty Williams, who is president of the Friends of Maxwell organization. The event also included a meal featuring chili and burgers using elk meat. Next week the Free Press plans to publish an article about the popularity of the tour and the growth of interest in the events offered at the state-funded refuge.
