County sets firework dates

The Marion County Board of Commissioners met on Monday, June 10 for their regular meeting where they decided on the 2024 fireworks sales and discharge schedule. After much discussion, the board agreed that fireworks may be sold and discharged from 8 a.m. to midnight on June 27- 29 and July 1-5 and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 30.

Marion County Administrator Tina Spencer also gave road updates in her weekly report. She reported that the 290th project is delayed slightly due to weather.

The blade patching is underway on county roads. Spencer reported that they are focusing first on roads to be overlaid.

The roads that were micro-surfaced earlier this year are being striped soon.

Spencer reported that the department is struggling with equipment breakdowns. As part of the solution, the board approved the purchase of a cab and chassis for a dump truck for $125,475. It is six months ahead of schedule but the board agreed it would be good to update the equipment and keep things running. They will pay for it out of the special equipment funds.

Spencer’s report also mentioned some minor road flooding occurred near Marion. The Road & Bridge Department is still assessing damage.

Spencer reported that all three EMS shift supervisors have been hired. The shift supervisors are Gwenda Grover, Kevin Marler and Mickey Price.

County Clerk Ashley Herpich is in the process of value certification.

Spencer gave an update that during the recent heavy rains and wind there have been some leaks including some water coming into the courthouse basement under the south door. Since that time the exterior drains have been cleared and a new threshold was installed. She said the annex also had a roof leak which was patched. 1240 Commercial also had a leak which caused interior ceiling damage. This is being handled by NF Construction.

In other business, the board:
