Community Plaza Project gets large, surprise donation

On Tuesday morning, Bryan Coffey, CFO of Herington Hospital and Hillsboro Healthcare Clinic, presented a large donation to the city of Hillsboro.

“Bryan and I met with Staci Silhan who has been leading our Community Plaza Project and after a little bit of conversation, Bryan and the board of Herington Hospital were moved to do more community engagement so they gave us a $100,000 donation to the Community Plaza Project,” Hillsboro City Administrator explained to the Hillsboro City Council at their meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

Coffey had presented the gift earlier that day to Silhan. He explained what led up to the gift when he met with the council.

“When we had our ribbon cutting and I was talking to Staci and she was showing me the area behind the building that the community and the city had been planning for years for the splash pad, God just really put it on my heart that I need to go back to my board and say that God has been faithful to us and blessed us with a profit. So I had to go back to my CEO and my hospital coordinator and tell them that I know I am a financial officer, but we need to tithe and I think we can tithe back into the community that we serve,” said Coffey.

Coffey joked that after the CEO made him check his temperature multiple times to be sure he was healthy and sane, she let him talk to the board. The board agreed with him and supported the move.

“Well, we will certainly give thanks to God but also to you and to the board. We certainly can’t tell you enough how much it means to us,” said Mayor Lou Thurston.
