Goessel

Cross Country—Donna Washmon is the new head cross country coach for Goessel High School.

“We have two boys returning from our state cross country team from last year: Joey Lapp and Javin Schmidt,” said Washmon. “The two returning girls are juniors Cheyenne Sawyer and Braylyn Hoopes.

Both boys and the girls were league champions last year. The boys were second in their regionals last year.”

Other key runners for the boys will be junior Karl Raddatz, sophomore Levi Olson and freshman Aidan Impson.

A key runner for the girls will be freshman Delaney Gibson.

“Both teams have a good chance to place high in the league. Everyone is improving and the team had two team practices throughout the summer every week. Our goal is going to state as a team or some individuals,” said Washmon. On Thursday, they competed at the Hesston cross country meet. They had a senior, Joey Lapp, place at 16th and had two juniors place, Javin Schmidt in 20th and Cheyenne Sawyer in 16th.

Coming—The Bluebirds compete next on Sept. 15 at Bennington.

Volleyball—Goessel took fourth at their home invitational, beating Canton-Galva, Moundridge and Burrton in pool play before losing to Central Christian and Moundridge in tournament play.

Goessel traveled to Wakefield on Tuesday, but results were not available as of press time.

Hillsboro

Cross Country—The Hillsboro cross country ream traveled to Wamego last week, with the girls taking seventh place at the meet. Times were: Quinlyn Funk: 21:43.6; Ainsley Duell: 22:12.2; Moriah Jost: 23:37.4; Nora Hein: 24:38.4; Trudy Hein: 28:11.0; and Grace Hein: 31:50.0 for the girls. For the boys, the times were: Casen Steinert: 24:33.4 and Deon Weeks: 24:35.7.

Volleyball: The Hillsboro girls volleyball team were runners-up at state last year and they return with many starters from last season’s squad including senior Kori Arnold – 2nd Team CKL All-league 2020; 1st Team CKL ALl-League 2021; 2A State All-Tournament Team 2021; 2A 2nd Team All-State; already surpassed 1,000 digs in her first 3 years and junior Zaylee Werth – 2nd Team CKL All-league 2021; 2A 2nd Team All-State. Junior Savannah Shahan is also a solid starter having made CKL All-league 2021.

“In addition, we have several more girls who saw significant time on the varsity floor and/or practiced with us every day. This experience should contribute to very competitive drills and games in our gym

this year. And that should only make us better as we continue throughout the season,” said coach Sandy Arnold who is starting her 19th season as head coach at HHS.

Other key players will be seniors Ella Suderman (Setter), D’Myia Cox (MH/Opp), Kirsten Kluver (MH/Opp), Keeley Brewer (OH/Opp), Makenna Reed (OH/Opp) and junior Anslee Brewer (MH).

The team is focusing on areas that need improvement from the beginning.

“Once again, we have high expectations for post-season play. This will also require strong serving from each position and consistency in our passing game. Each weeknight match and each tournament are steps toward a higher goal. Not trying to look too far ahead though, many of the girls have set their goals high and that includes making a return trip to the state tournament to take care of some unfinished business,” said Arnold.

The team knows that the CKL league is always competitive so every night will be a challenge, but they

plan to be fighting for a spot at the top.

The Trojans played well on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Cheney.

Hillsboro def. Cheney, 25-17, 18-25, 25-21; Hillsboro def. Hesston, 21-25, 25-14, 25-15

“The Cheney match was a good contest for us because Cheney has traditionally had an excellent program. This year is no different as they were a pre-season #3 pick in 3A. It was a close contest from the start. Both teams had their share of kills and digs with many rallies in between. The girls served tough and when we stayed on the offensive we were successful.

Our second match was with a much improved Hesston team. The Swathers were very scrappy and smart and made us work the first game. Eventually I believe our serving and attack options led us past them. This was our first league match of the season,” said Arnold.

She went on to say that they are still putting pieces together and learning new things about the team that they can work on to make them better.

Coming—On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the team travels to Smoky Valley for a triangular with Smoky Valley and Lyons.
