Accident involving three fatalities in Marion County

An accident that took the lives of three people, occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25 at the U-56 and K-256 junction.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by Charlotte Sue Cole, 52, of Moundridge, was northbound on K-256 just west of Marion.

Cole pulled out in front of a 2016 Ford Taurus, driven by Rebecca Renee Young of Broken Arrow, OK. Young was westbound on U-56 when Cole pulled out in front of her which caused her to hit the passenger side of Cole’s minivan. Both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch.

Cole died at the scene. A passenger riding with her, Jessica Dawn Schmidt, 19, of Fruitland, Idaho was taken to Wesley Medical Center where she died from her injuries.

Young and passenger Ramona Richmond, 58, of Salina were both taken to St. Luke Hospital and Living Center. Young’s injuries appeared to be minor while Richmond’s injuries were suspected to be serious. Another passenger Wanda L. Richmond, 85, of Marion, died at the scene.

All were wearing seat belts.
