410 BOE discusses next year’s school calendar

The USD 410 School Board met earlier than normal for their Dec. 11 board meeting due to the holiday music program that night. The board met and conducted a few items of business and then had dinner together before adjourning and dismissing to attend the concert.

Superintendent Clint Corby explained that he has been working on the school calendar for next year and has come across unusual problems with it.

“So I just wanted to share a little bit about some things that we were looking at. I have not gotten to the point where I’m ready to make a recommendation to you. I just wanna let you know what’s going on,” said Corby.

He said that the district has an early option for school starting and a couple of late options. The early option would mean school starting on Aug. 15.

“And that just starts feeling pretty early. Then potential activities could present a coaching nightmare,” said Corby.

Corby also explained that there is a push right now for all schools in Kansas to start after Labor Day.

“I’m not overly concerned about that that’s going to happen, but that’s out there. So we could start in September. And so I will say that if that does happen, everything I’m saying here doesn’t matter. There will be a new option at that point, but that won’t happen until May anyway,” said Corby.

The district has a later option as well.

“That leads us to the later option for the 1st day of school to be the 22nd, which feels late,” said Corby. “So it doesn’t fix all the problems in the land of activities, but it does balance that.”

Board member Sara Wichert pointed out that a later start will help with not having such high heat for practices.

No decisions were made.

The board accepted the resignation of Michelle Ediger from her position as Hillsboro Elementary School Third Grade Teacher effective May 16, 2024. They approved the issuance of a contract to Michael Ashland to serve as Hillsboro High School Assistant Wrestling Coach for the 2023-2024 school year. They also approved the issuance of a contract to Kevin Colle to serve as the Hillsboro High School Forensics Sponsor for the 2023-2024 school year.

In other business, the board:

* Approved the ESSDACK Interlocal Agreement for five years from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2029. Every five years, the ESSDACK Interlocal Agreement is up for renewal. USD 410 belong to ESSDACK for assistance with professional development needs and for health insurance.
