Services scheduled for Cox

The Celebration of Life service for Demarius Cox will be at 10 a.m. this Thursday, June 20, 2019 at the Tabor College Shari Flaming Center for the Arts in Hillsboro. It will be officiated by Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church Youth Pastor Sara Jo Waldron.

There will also be a Public Wake the night before from 6-8 p.m. at HMBC which is located at 300 Prairie Pointe in Hillsboro, Kansas.

Cox, who turned 16 in January, died in Friday, June 7 while attending youth camp in Westcliffe, Colorado.

The cause of death is still unknown.

“The autopsy won’t have an official report until toxicology is done which will be another week or two,” said Waldron who has been working closely with the family.

Demarius is the son of Demetrius and Ciara Cox, who are both well known members of the community especially with the youth of Hillsboro since both work in the Hillsboro Middle High School. He has an older brother who lives in Florida and two younger sisters who live in Hillsboro.

Demarius was a student, an athlete and an actor. He also participated in many activities. Many people have commented on social media and throughout the community on what a great smile and gentle personality Demarius had.

For those interested in helping the family, there is a fund set up at Emprise Bank or you can drop monetary donations off at the church.

“They have felt very supported by the community and that support and love should continue in the years to come. All of their (the family) tangible needs are being met through extreme generosity from the community,” said Waldron. “The best thing we can do is to keep remembering Demarius and recognizing his absence.”
