The Building Center, with stores in Marion and Hillsboro, has been recognized as the 2022 Existing Business of the Year for the Kansas Small Business Development Center at Emporia State University.

In 2017, owner John Wheeler, along with his son Morgan, and John’s brother Jason, opened the Building Center, a small family-owned lumber yard focused on bringing competitively priced name brand products to rural locations.

Partnering with the Kansas SBDC, the Wheelers developed a business plan, financial plans, and received assistance in obtaining capital to open their business.

“[Our advisor] Lisa has helped us from the beginning with all aspects of starting a new business and has been a wealth of knowledge and immense help even now,” said John. “Lisa was our standout; she was there for us every step of the way.”

The Kansas Small Business Development Center will recognize The Building Center’s accomplishments at a future, locally-hosted event.
