Senior Scribbles (May 16, 2018)

HILLSBORO SENIOR CENTER

We need more volunteers. As school will be getting out, if anyone 14 years or older would like to help, let us know. You can call 620-947-2304 for more information.

We hope everyone had a Happy Mother’s Day. We had our board business meeting Tuesday, May 15. Haris Zafar, audiologist, will be here at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, for hearing aid checks. It is first come, first serve. We will also have sing-a-long Thursday May 17.

As a reminder, we will be closed on Monday May 28 for Memorial Day holiday. We want to let people know that we offer meal tickets and they make a great gift for your loved ones.

We hope you will join us soon at the Senior Center. We also want to let people know that the Senior Center is run off donations only. The suggested meal donation goes to the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging for our food and also pays the site manager and head cook wages. It does not pay any of our monthly bills to keep our center open.

So we are needing more donations because we have been low the past few month and need more donations coming in. We are also going to need a new hot water heater and that will take a lot of money. So please if anyone can help, we will be grateful. We need to keep our center going for it is great fellowship and sometimes the only meal our seniors have. So we want to be able to provide that to all our people. We thank everyone for your support to our center. We are blessed having everyone who comes to the center.

A reminder that anyone any age can come eat at the center. The suggested donation is 60 and over $3.50 and 59 and under $5.25. It’s a great price for a great hot meal. For more information, call 620-947-2304 or stop by 212 N. Main St.

Myrta Billings presented her second in a series of nutrition lessons to us May 9. She will finish her series presentations May 23.

Our big news is our make-up meal scheduled for noon Saturday, May 19. We will have Harlow’s grilled hamburgers, potato salad, pasta salad, three-bean salad, watermelon and in honor of Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding cupcakes made by Jan Wiens. Wear your tiara.

If you can’t get to a week day Harlow’s grilled burger meal, now’s your chance on this special Saturday. Call in your reservation, 382-2942.

PEABODY SENIOR CENTER

We celebrated Mother’s Day on Thursday, May 10, by giving each mother a carnation and some sweet treats. Peabody Health and Rehab also dined with us, so we were even able to share Mother’s Day with them. Hoping all you mothers out there were able to spend time with your family and enjoyed your day.

SCMC meeting will be held Friday, May 18, at Marion. The business meeting will be right after lunch on May 22. Memorial Day Brunch will be Friday, May 25. We will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. “Exercise Your Brain” will be a program presented by Dawn Miller with “Angels” on Wednesday, May 30.

In June, we will be setting up a date to start a caregivers meeting. A day will be chosen and the first meeting will be at our Center on an afternoon. We hope if you are a caregiver, there will be tips you can use and places you can contact that can be of help. Several of us who have been a caregiver would have liked to have had help. So now is a chance to meet with other caregivers and know you are not alone.

We hope you can come and enjoy a good, nutritious meal for $3.50 for 60-plus and $5.25 for 59 and under. Be sure to make a reservation. To take advantage of our Meals on Wheels program, call 620-983-2523.
