Parkside will host Lifelong Learning event on Aug. 12

August Lifelong Learning at Parkside will be at 10 a.m. on Aug. 12 at Parkside Apartments at 1 Park Ave. in Hillsboro. The topic will be Frederic Remington before he became a household name as America’s most famous chronicler of the “Old West,” as he tried his hand at sheep ranching in northwest Butler County. The public is invited.

Doug Claassen will share tales from the locals who knew Remington. He will also tell of the times before Remington became famous for his art and writings, using Remington’s own stories and Kansas illustrations. He was always looking for a way to make life exciting, be it chasing jackrabbits on horseback, horse racing, boxing matches or pulling pranks, doing anything to avoid the day-to-day drudgery of sheep herding.
