Hillsboro Wrestling Club athletes qualify for Kansas Kids State Championship Tournament

The Hillsboro Wrestling Club competed in state-level events over the weekend with several qualifying for the Kansas Kids State Championship Tournament.

On Saturday, seven wrestlers competed in Chapman in the Kansas District 3 Wrestling Tournament. The top four medalists in each age group weight class at Districts qualify for the USA Wrestling Kansas Kids State Championship Tournament to be held next weekend at the Stormont Vail Event Center in Topeka.

Those placing to qualify for Kids State include Madison Kenney, 8 & Under Girls, 90 lbs; Jaxon Chrislip, 14 & Under, 130 lbs; Aaron Hein, 14 & Under, 140 lbs; Sutton Redger, 14 & Under, 165 lbs.

Others participating that came up short of qualifying: Bo Gaines, 10 & Under, 79 lbs; Mason Bartel, 12 & Under, 140 lbs; Aimee Kelley, 14 & Under Girls, 136 lbs.

On Sunday, six wrestlers competed at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane in various events.

Jaxon Chrislip competed in the USA Wrestling Kansas Middle School State Tournament in the 132 lb weight class. He went 2-2 on the day, coming up short of a top-six finish.

Madison Kenney (82 lbs) and Aimee Kelley (138 lbs) both participated in the Girl’s Elementary/Middle School Tournament.

Mason Bartel wrestled in the Elementary Heartland Duals Qualifier in the 140 lb weight class where he placed fourth. This qualified him to participate on one of six teams to represent Team Kansas in the Heartland Elementary National Duals in Council Bluffs, Iowa later this spring.

Collin Stewart (55 lbs) and Braxton Klenda (88 lbs) both participated and competed very well in the Kansas 6 and Under Age Group State Championships. Stewart had twenty-seven wrestlers in his bracket. He finished the day with a 2-2 record and had a very good season in his first year participating in wrestling. Klenda went undefeated on the day (3-0) and won the 6 & Under 88 lb State Championship. He is the first 6 and Under State Champion from the Hillsboro Wrestling Club and he finished his season undefeated (23-0) in the 6 and Under age division.

“We are very proud of all of the wrestlers that participated in the Hillsboro Wrestling Club throughout this winter. The program is very appreciative of all the support and involvement from the parents in the club,” said Coach Scott O’Hare. “Also, we want to extend a huge thank you to the coaches in the program. John Hein, Alex Jost and Jacob Yoder have spent a tremendous amount of time working with the wrestlers in our club over the past three months.and have done an awesome job teaching them about the sport of wrestling as well as many other important personal character traits.”
