Makovec, Shafer plan May wedding

Shaina Makovec and Cody Shafer of Tampa have announced their engagement.

The bride-to-be is the daughter of Gail and Marissa Makovec of Ramona and granddaughter of Jane Makovec of Marion and the late E.J. (Skeeter) Makovec and Herman and Audrey Kukuk of Perry, Okla.

The groom-elect is the son of Gene Schafer of Durham and Vaughn and Dee Juhnke of Moundridge.

Grandparents are Perry and Irene Ratzloff of Hillsboro and the late George and Molly Schafer.

She is a 2005 graduate of Centre High School and 2009 graduate of Kansas State University with a bachelor?s degree in apparel and textile marketing. She is employed with a Texas company, traveling to markets around the U.S. selling the company?s products.

He is a 2000 graduate of Moundridge High School and a 2005 graduate of Tabor College with a bachelor?s degree in health, physical education and recreation. He is a self-employed farmer/rancher in Tampa.

The wedding is planned for May 8 at the Pilsen Catholic Church with a reception to follow.

Nickel, Hawkins to marry in Newton

Carlene Nickel and Nathan Hawkins, both of Newton, announce their engagement.

The parents of the bride-to be are William and Kayla Nickel of Hillsboro.

The groom-elect is the son of Mike and Luann Sawyer and Tom Hawkins, all of Halstead.

She is a graduate of Hillsboro High School and Kansas State University and is employed with American Family Insurance in Wichita.

He is a graduate of Halstead High School and Kansas State University and is employed with Wray Roofing in Newton.

A May 1 wedding is planned at First Mennonite Church in Newton.
