Deaths (Dec. 22, 2010)


retired school teacher, coach and guidance counselor for Goessel, Moundridge, Plains, Lehigh and Hillsboro school districts, died Sunday, Dec. 12, at Kidron Bethel Healthcare in North Newton.

A memorial service was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Grace Hill Mennonite Church, rural Newton.

He was born June 4, 1916, in Whitewater, to Isaac and Emma (Harms) Balzer. On Jan. 1, 1942, he was married to Louise H. Schroeder, who predeceased him in 2000.

Arthur is survived by daughter Ann and husband Mike Doerksen of Newton; two sisters, Laura and husband Henry Janzen of North Newton, and Wilma R. Harms of Newton; sister-in-law Pauline Balzer of Newton; and two granddaughters.

Memorials may be left with Bethel College, Kidron Bethel, or Grace Hill Mennonite Church in care of Petersen Funeral Home.


? steven k. crowther, 62,

a farmer and stockman, died Dec. 14 at his home in rural Roxbury.

The service was Dec. 18 at Roxbury United Parish. Burial was at Roxbury Valley View Cemetery with military rites.

He was born Feb. 4, 1948, to Kenneth H. and Iva Fern (Ander?son) Crowther in McPher?son. On Dec. 2, 1967, he was married to Lynnie Crowther, who survives.

Other survivors include daughter Kristi and Gene Base of Brookville; brothers Stewart and Janette of Lindsborg, Brian and Christy of McPherson and Bret of El Dorado and two grandchildren.

? Wanita J. goentzel, 81,

a farm wife, died Dec. 20 at Salem Home in Hillsboro.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, 105 Eastmoor Drive, Marion.

Visitation with family is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Burial will be at Mennonite Brethren Cemetery, Hillsboro.

She was born Sept. 21, 1929, to Johann and Helen (Goessen) Ewert in Newton. On Sept. 16, 1949, she was married to Vernon Goentzel, who predeceased her in 2008.

Survivors include children John Goentzel and Jocelyn Classen, both of Marion, and Rose Mary and Craig Loewe of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister Annette Stocklas of Las Cruces, NM; and seven grandchildren.

? Shirley l. Mains, 75,

a homemaker, died Dec. 12 at Parkside Homes, Hillsboro.

The service was Dec. 16 at Corner Stone Baptist Church, Emporia. Burial was at Brummett Cemetery, Texas.

She was born Dec. 3, 1935, to Tommy and Sadie Thomblin of Texas.

Survivors include sister Mary Ruth Henry of Lampasas, Texas; ex-husband Floyd Mains of Greeley; children Roy Wheelis of Council Grove, John and Kerri Mains of Lane, Bernice Mains of Tampa, Paul Mains of Lebo and Janet Mains of Waverly; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.


? clyde s. schroeder, 60,

a body shop manager, died Dec. 16 in Hillsboro.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe, Hillsboro, with pastor Dave Platt officiating.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 7, 1950, to Edward J. and Frieda (Schmidt) Schroeder in Goessel. On May 19, 1972, he was married to Sharon Dahl, who survives.

He also is survived by son Marc Schroeder of Hillsboro; daughter Jana Schroeder of Wichita; brothers Dennis Schroeder and Jerry Schroeder, both of rural Goessel; sisters Annalene Klassen of Goessel and Vera Flaming of Dallas, Ore.

a retired store owner in Marion, died Dec. 19 at Bethesda Home, Goessel.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Marion Christian Church, 140 Elm St., Marion. Burial will be at Marion Cemetery.

She was born July 6, 1919, to Orville and Clara (Gaunt) Miesse in Marion. On June 8, 1941, she was married to Richard Varenhorst, who predeceased her.

Survivors include children Richard and Pam Varenhorst Jr. and Janet and Chris Killough, all of Marion; siblings William Miesse of Collierville, Tenn., and Donna Fruechting and J. B. Miesse, both of Marion; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
