◼ John Savoia, 91, Hillsboro, died March 9, 2019, at Parkside Home in Hillsboro.

A Celebration of Life Service was at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2019, at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

He was born June 5, 1927, in Piermont, New York. He married Lola Stratman December 11, 1981, in Hillsboro.

Survivors include wife, Lola Savoia of Hillsboro; sons, John S. Savoia of Boston, MA, Timothy Savoia of Fresno, CA; step sons, Robert Kim Washmon of Leadville, CO, Gregory Washmon of Hillsboro; daughter, Ruth Savoia Restrepo of Austin, Texas; step daughters, Terri Todd of Whitewater, Cynthia Fleming of Hillsboro, Janis McIntyre of Edmond, OK; sisters, Anna Lepori, Connie Dillon, and Etta Pippi; 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

◼ Helen Schafer, 93, died on March 16, 2019, at Kansas Christian Home in Newton.

The Funeral Service is at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019, at Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service time at the Funeral Home.

She was born September 28, 1925, to Jacob and Christina (Miller) Schafer at Durham.

◼ Myrna Jost, 86, Hillsboro, died March 12, 2019, at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church rural Hillsboro.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro.

She was born June 21, 1932, in Hillsboro to Harry and Esther (Winter) Eitzen. She married Victor Jost August 25, 1955, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church Rural Hillsboro.

Survivors include husband, Victor Jost of Hillsboro; daughters, Connie (David) Faber of Hillsboro, Nancy (Mark) Rogers of Rural Hillsboro; sister, Kathleen Viergever of Ft. Worth, Texas; 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

◼ Richard Herbel, 75, of Solomon died on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18, 2019, at the Community Bible Church in Abilene with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating.

Burial followed at Prairie Mound Cemetery in Solomon.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene.

He was born in Marion County December 7, 1943, to Alex and Bernice (Johnston) Herbel. On January 19, 1964, he was united in marriage to Sharon Craft.

Richard is survived by his loving wife Sharon; daughters Shelly Cole of Abilene and Julie Klein (Joe) of Abilene and one son, Scott Herbel (Carrie) of Solomon; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald Herbel (Ruth) of Marion and sister-in-law Darlene Herbel of Salina.

◼ Malvin Schmidt, 89, died March 18, 2019 at Hillsboro Community Hospital in Hillsboro. He was born June 2, 1929 to Andrew and Bena (Balzer) Schmidt rural Hillsboro. He married Darlene Klaassen October 4, 1953 in Hillsboro. Survivors include: sons, Jerry Schmidt of Salina, Leroy Schmidt of McPherson, Kelly (Jean) Schmidt of Harbor, WA; daughter, Malvina Schmidt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by:wife, Darleen Schmidt in 2017; brothers, Andrew, Sam, Emanuel, Daniel; sister, Elma Rempel.
