? JAMES T. HAYNES JR., 72, a nomad traveler, died Aug. 27 at Hillsboro Community Hospital.

The service was Aug. 30 at Sunset Spiritualist Church, Wells.

He was born April 13, 1943, to James T. and Lena (Maghe) Haynes Sr. at Pittsburg.

Survivors include sons James H. Haynes and John D. Haynes, both of Wichita; brother Dennis Haynes of Salina; sisters Linda Klewicki of Rapid City, S.D., Denise Lopez of Wichita and Connie Guhr of Hillsboro; long-time friend Barbara Pointer of Oklahoma; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and sent in care of Jost Funeral Home, P.O. Box 266, Hillsboro, KS 67063.

? BRIAN W. LEGG, 49, a dairyman, of Hillsboro, died Aug. 28 at Bethesda Home, Goessel, after battling ALS.

Cremation took place. The service is at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Marion County Lake North Shelter House.

He was born Dec. 22, 1965, to Russel D. and Sandra K. Legg at St. Joseph, Mo.

Survivors include sisters Twila Legg and husband Shannon Allen and Laura Legg and companion Don Chamberlain, all of Marion; two nephews and one niece and one great-nephew.

? DANIEL HARRISON SCHMIDT, 81, died Aug. 23 at Mooresville, N.C.

The service was Aug. 29 at Berea Baptist Church in Mooresville.

He was born Jan. 15, 1934, to Jacobena Balzer and Andrew Schmidt at Hillsboro. On April 14, 1984, he was married to Joan Wagenman, who survives.

Other survivors include sister Alma Remple and brother Malvin Wesley Schmidt, all of Kansas; children Martin Schmidt of South Dakota, Nancy Lorson of Kansas, Matthew Schmidt and Daniden Griel, both of Virginia; stepchildren Larry Klaus of North Carolina and Linda Ritter of Tennessee; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

? DENNIS MAX SCHMIDT, 81, a retired graphic designer for Hesston Corp., died Aug. 27 at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community in Buhler.

The service was Aug. 31 at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community with pastor Nick Rempel officiating.

Burial was at Buhler Municipal Cemetery.

He was born July 28, 1934, to Edward J. and Martha Giesbrecht Schmidt of McPherson. He was married to Joan Siemens in 1962 until 1994.

Survivors include son Stirling and wife Becky Schmidt of Derby; daughter Shana and husband Scott Thornhill of Marion and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee and sent in care of Buhler Mortuary, 120 N. Main, Buhler, KS 67522.

? EUGENE V. “GENE” STARKEL, 86, of McPherson and retired in 1994 from Mid-America Pipeline, died Aug. 27 at his home.

The service was Aug. 31 at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion, in charge of all arrangements.

Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Florence.

He was born June 2, 1929, to Constantine and Lena Starkel at Florence. On Dec. 23, 1951, he was married to June Widler, who predeceased him.

Survivors include son Jerry and wife Jennifer Starkel and three grandchildren, all of McPherson; and siblings Les Starkel, Arnold Starkel and Mildred George, all of El Dorado.
