Snow knight stands winter vigil

A 6-foot-6-inch Knights Templar made of snow has stood guard outside the Ed and Sylvia Unger home at 502 S. Adams in Hillsboro for more than a week?and if temperatures continue to hover in the low teens, he could be standing in their front yard until spring. Three of the Ungers? four sons, visiting from Miami, Fla., decided to enjoy the benefits of a ?white Christmas? by building a snowman. At least that was the original plan, according to son, Matthew, 25, who, along with his brothers, Andy, 27, and David, 33, spent about two hours Monday, Dec. 28, getting the snow figure just right. Why a Knights Templar? Matthew said he and David are both interested in history, and it was also their major at Tabor College. Paying close attention to detail, the knight even had a red Templar cross and sword. Sylvia said her son Michael would have also helped in the snow creation, but left the day after Christmas. ?There?s not much opportunity to build a snowman in Miami,? Matthew said.
