Seven Lions Club members from Hillsboro received the Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor bestowed by the organization, on Monday, March 10, at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. Pictured from left are Lloyd Funk, Jim Peters, Norma J. Cabeen, Bob Hein, John Unruh, Tonja Wienck and Kermit Ratzlaff. The award recognizes for the efforts of the members on behalf of the Campaign Sight First II, a global project launched by the Lions Club International Foundation to fight preventable and treatable blindness. The organization hopes to eradicate river blindness in Latin America by 2010, treating 10 million people for the disease and providing 2 million people with cataract surgery. Money also will be used to develop clinics in most areas of the world. The local Lions raised more than $5,000 for the cause. Wienck is a member of the Noon Lions Club; the other six are members of the Evening Lions Club.
