?Run For Your Momma? run/walk to support MOPS of Marion

Area runners and walkers can have a good time getting in a good workout while supporting a good cause Aug. 8 by participating in ?Run For Your Momma,? a benefit event at Marion County Lake sponsored by the MOPS of Marion organization.

MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers, an organization that aims to provide social and spiritual support for mothers of children age birth through 5 years old.

?Run For Your Momma? will include three events: a half-marathon (13.1 miles) for individuals; a half-marathon relay involving two runners, each covering half the distance; and a 2-mile fun run and walk.

The half-marathon route begins at the lake and winds through rural roads to Marion and then back to the lake. The 2-mile event will be at the lake.

?We want people of all ages to come out, and are encouraging moms to bring their strollers,? said Bethany Carlson, one of the MOPS organizers. ?People can just walk the 2-mile if they want to. We want to make it a fun atmosphere.?

The half-marathon races will start simultaneously at 7:30 a.m. with the 2-mile starting at 8:30 a.m.

?Unique prizes? will be awarded to the top finishers in a variety of age groups for men and women, according to Carlson. Most of the prizes are donated by local businesses. Every participant 8 years old and younger will receive a prize.

Entry fees are $25 for the individual half-marathon, $32 for a two-person half-marathon team and $12 for the 2-mile event. Registration and signup start 45 minutes prior to each race.

To guarantee a T-shirt, entries should be received by July 12.

Entry forms are available at Vogt?s Hometown Market and the city building in Hills?boro, and Carlson?s Grocery, Tampa State Bank and the city building in Marion.

MOPS of Marion recently completed its first full year of activities. It offers meetings one Saturday and one Monday evening a month at Eastmoor United Methodist Church. Free child care is provided. Each participant is asked to pay a $25 fee for a full year of meetings.
