Hillsboro Elementary students observe Children’s Books week with food theme

Hillsboro Elementary School recently celebrated Children?s Book Week with a variety of activities.

With the theme ?Feed Your Mind?Read,? all the activities were based around on food.

To kick off the week, students gathered in the lunchroom to discussing the many materials people read in their daily lives, including cookbooks.

Connie Weber, representing Pampered Chef, shared hints and tips about measuring and reading recipes. Students then read a recipe on how to make a reindeer cookie. They had to gather the proper ingredients, then follow the recipe card to create the cookies?which the later sampled.

There were several daily activities throughout the week. Fifth-graders presented food poems during the morning announcements. Librarian Sandy Arnold challenged the students with food trivia questions from children?s literature.

Winners received a snack food and a juice bag if they answered the bonus question correctly also.

Finally, students and staff celebrated ?DEAR? time each day. Students carried books with them everywhere they went. When the announcement was made, everyone had to ?Drop Everything And Read? for 10 minutes.

On Friday the week?s celebration culminated with a variety of stations dealing with food, literature and fun.
