HMBC bake sale at Farmers’ Market

 

The Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church music committee and choir will host a bake sale starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at the Farmers’ Market at the Schaeffler House in Hillsboro.

Proceeds will go toward the organ/musical instruments fund.

 

Farmerettes plan June 8 meeting

 

The Farmerettes will meet at 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, in the home of Ruth Ann Penner.

The lesson will be a surprise by Penner.

 

Kids: ‘Get A Clue!” at Goessel library

 

The Goessel Public Library has begun its “Get A Clue!” summer reading program, open to youth preschool-age through young adult

Story times will be held each Wednesday from June 13 through July 18 for preschoolers through fifth graders. Story time will be at 9 a.m. for the preschoolers, at 10 a.m. for kindergartners through second-graders and at 11 a.m. for third- through fifth-graders 3rd-5th at 11:00.

The third-fifth grade sleep-over will be July 18.

Pre-readers are invited to join the program with a parent or other helper who will read to them and help keep their reading chart.

Children who are reading, through eighth grade, can read any books they choose and keep track of the titles. There will be prizes awarded as reading goals are meet.

Books read during June and July will be counted toward their reading goals. Drawing prizes for all groups will be awarded Aug. 3.

Area teens and tweens (this spring’s sixth-graders through 18-year-olds) are invited to “YNK—You Never Know” this summer by participating a program on Fridays from June 15 through July 27.

These kids plan activities and choose prizes. We could go to the movies, have a mystery party and more. Our summer schedule will be flexible to accommodate their summer schedules. Teens and tweens can also choose participate in the programming and/or reading for prizes.

Those interested in the program are encouraged to register for planning purposes but are welcome to join in throughout the summer.

Military museum grand opening

 

The Canton Kansas Stars & Stripes Military Museum will celebrate its grand opening starting with a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9.

A project of the Friends of Canton organization, the museum has as its purpose to preserve the history of all military branches of service and to educate the present and future generations about the men and women who serve and sacrifice to keep America free.

Additional items, such as weapons, will be on display at the Canton American Legion Post 192. Lunch will be available there as well, followed by an evening barbecue dinner.

Sons of the King in concert June 10

 

Sons of the King, a gospel quartet specializing in southern gospel and familiar hymns, will be in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel.

A freewill offering will be taken.

The public is invited to attend.

 

Ryding celebrating 30 years in ministry

 

John Ryding, former pastor of Zion Lutheran and Our Savior Lutheran churches in Hillsboro and Marion, is celebrating 30 years in the ministry.

Ryding served the Hillsboro and Marion communities for 21 years before moving in 2003 to O’Neill, Neb.

Christ Lutheran Church of O’Neill will host a dinner and open house June 10 in honor of Ryding’s 30th anniversary of ordination. The public is invited to attend.

 

TAPP 2008 planning meeting for parents

 

Parents of the Hillsboro High School 2007-08 juniors and seniors are invited to a Trojan After-Prom Party planning meeting at 8 p.m. June 10 in the west shelter house in Hillsboro City Park.

A report about TAPP 2007 at the Alley in Wichita will be followed by a review of options for 2008 and the formation of committees.

TAPP is organized by parents to provide a late-night party for HHS juniors and seniors in a safe, fun and alcohol- and drug-free environment.

Goessel Mennonite forecasts SNO(W)

 

The forecast is for S.N.O.(W) on the Goessel Mennonite Church lawn at 7 p.m. June 10.

Sunday Night Overdrive Worship will feature a time of praise through contemporary music and prayer in front of the church.

The public is invited to attend. Please bring lawn chairs or blankets, and don't forget the mosquito spray.

In the case of inclement weather, the worship will be moved indoors.

 

PEO chapter plans potluck June 11

 

P.E.O. Chapter DB will hold a potluck supper at 6 p.m. June 11 in the home of Judy Mills.

 

Creative Arts Camp at Parkview MB

 

Kids’ detective skills are wanted at this summer’s Creative Arts Camps from 9 a.m. to noon June 11-15 at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

Kids who have completed first through sixth grade are invited to attend.

Card shower request for Loney’s 80th

 

Leona Loney, former Marion County resident and secretary of Marion County Holy Family Parish, will celebrate her 80th birthday June 12.

She and her late husband, James M. Loney Jr., have five children, John, Thomas, Patrick, Paul, Linda and Stephanie; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
