Tampa community groups to meet

Tampa Lions Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Tampa Senior Center.

A Tampa Community Association meeting will be held at 7 p.m. after the Lions Club meeting.

Tampa Lion?s Club to hold pancake feed

The Tampa Lion?s Club will hold its annual pancake and sausage feed from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 2 at the Tampa Senior Center. Entertainment will be provided by the ?Red Hat Ladies.?

Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 to 12.

Immediately following the pancake feed, the Tampa Association Committee will sponsor game night.

Schmidt to celebrate100th birthday

Ella M. (Klassen) Schmidt, a resident at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, will celebrate her 100th birthday on March 8 with her family.

She was born March 6, 1908, to Peter J. and Maria Fedrau Klassen at the family farm southwest of Goessel.

In 1927, she was married to Ernest J. Schmidt, a childhood friend. They operated a grain and dairy farm south of Canton until 1961 when they moved to Hesston. Ernest died in 1993.

Children are Darlene and Franklin Pankratz of Buhler, Laura Flaming of Goessel, Melvin and Charlotte Schmidt of Hyatsville, Md., DeVera and Wiley Wenger of Beaverton, Ore., and DuMont and Barbara Schmidt of Whitewater.

Free child screening to be held in Marion

A free screening for children birth through 5-years-old will be held Tuesday, March 11 in Marion at the Marion Presbyterian Church, Lawrence at Elm. Appointments will be available from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The screening will assess development in the cognitive, social, motor and speech/language areas. Vision and hearing will also be checked. This process takes about one hour for a child to complete. All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary.

Cathy Fish to speak at Hillsboro Kiwanis

The Hillsboro Kiwanis Club will meet at noon Tuesday, March 4 at the Hillsboro city building.

Lunch will be provided by Fat N Sassy BBQ for $7. Following a lunch and a short meeting, Cathy Fish from the Hillsboro Public Library will speak about the library operations and discuss what?s new and exciting for the future.

Parkview to host CE program March 9

A Christian Endeavor Program will be held at 7 p.m. March 9 at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church.

The program, consisting of a variety of vocal and instrumental music, will be held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first service held in the new church sanctuary.

The public is invited to attend.

Country Stitchers to meet March 3

Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet March 3 at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church.

Speaker will be Jan Hutchinson from Sedgwick. Bring a green or Irish-related fat quarter.

Soup benefit for Sgt. Ryan Newell

The Marion VFW Post 6958, Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion will hold a benefit soup supper and auction for Sgt. Ryan Newell and family from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 9 at the Marion VFW, 420 W. Santa Fe.

Newell is a wounded soldier currently undergoing rehabilitation and possibly more surgeries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The meal will consist of three soups, bread, crackers, vegetables and desserts. Cost is by donation.

GES kindergarten screening March 28

Goessel kindergarten screening will be held March 28 at the Goessel Mennonite Church.

To be eligible for kindergarten in 2008-09, children must turn 5 years old by Aug. 31.

Men O?Brass to play concert March 2

Men O?Brass will present a concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 2 at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, rural Hillsboro.

The group has appeared with the Kansas Mennonite Men?s Chorus, and specializes in hymn tunes and choruses.

Members are Steve Hanneman, Bob Delk, Paul Epp, John Janzen, Stirling Schmidt, Jerry Voth, Dennis Schmidt, Rod Just and Jim Pauls.

The public is invited to attend.
