Pilgrimage to Pilsen set for June 4-6

?

In honor of Father Emil Kapaun, Catholic priest and U.S. Army chaplain who died in Korea, a 58-mile walk is planned for June 4-6.

The walk, ?Pilgrimage to Pilsen? begins at 6:30 p.m. following Mass at Church of the Magdalen and ends after the 3 p.m. Mass Sunday at St. John Nepomucene Church in Pilsen. Meals will be provided for the pilgrims, said Father Eric Weldon, leading the pilgrimage.

Participants will need to bring a tent, sleeping bag, snacks, water bottle/canteen, hat and walking shoes.

Volunteers are still needed to drive, assist with transport, food preparations and water stations.

Quilts, old cars in Goessel June 11-13

?

Small quilts and old cars will be showcased during the second weekend in June at Mennonite Heritage & Agricultural Museum, 200 N. Poplar.

?Covered with Love: A Treas?ury of Doll and Crib Quilts? will open at 10 a.m. Friday, June 11, in the Prepara?tory School and continue during regular museum hours through Sunday, June 13.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The doll quilts will be displayed in themed settings. The crib quilts will be on exhibit in a more traditional quilt-show manner. About 100 quilts are expected to be entered.

The museum?s third annual antique and classic car show is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 13, in the museum parking lot. The exhibit will feature wheeled motorized transportation, including cars, trucks and motorcycles, in any condition and manufactured no later than 1980.

Four recognitions will be given: ?Best of Show,? ?People?s Choice? and ?Best of Show? first and second runners-up.

Sunday afternoon will also feature a silent auction of a wheat marquetry piece by North Newton wheat straw artisans Marie and Martha Voth. The piece depicts the Franz Store, a general store operating in Goessel from the early 1900s through the early 1940s.

The $4 per-person gate fee includes admission to the museum, quilt show, car/truck show and car/truck show exhibitor entry fee.

Reading program registration begins

?

Sign up for the 2010 Summer Reading Program is under way for children in four age groups at Hillsboro Public Library.

?The time will be spent reading books, playing games, activities, snacks and crafts with awards given for goals reached throughout the four weeks,? said librarian Delora Kaufman.

This year?s theme is, ?Make a Splash at Your Library.?

Children age 3-4 will meet from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; prekindergarten and kindergarten students from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; first- and second-graders from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays and third- through fifth-graders from 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., also Wednesday.

Tampa market to open today, June 2

?

The Tampa Farmers? Market will kick off its season today, June 2, and will be offered every Wednesday through the end of September.

The market begins at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Tampa. Vendors are welcome to exhibit free of charge.

Summer hours set at archival center

The Center For Mennonite Brethren Studies at Tabor College in Hillsboro has announced its summer hours from now until Aug. 23.

The archival center will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Thursday.

Free outdoor movie planned June 12

?

Classic cartoons and a movie will be shown on the lawn of the Schaeffler House, 510 S. Ash, at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 12.

Organizers suggest people bring lawn chairs or a blanket and enjoy a free movie.

Concessions will be sold by the Hillsboro Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Zookeeper to visit with kids at library

?

A zookeeper from Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventures, a non-profit wildlife organization near Salina, will be in Hillsboro at 3:30 p.m. to kick off its summer reading program.

?All children are invited whether interested in the summer reading program or not,? said Delora Kaufman, librarian.

Goessel?s reading program to begin

?

Goessel Public Library?s 2010 Summer Reading Programs will begin June 16 and continue to July 14 for preschool children, kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth grade.

Young adult groups will begin at 10 a.m. June 18 and continue through July 16.

The program is free and open to preschool through age 18 with prizes, story times, crafts and more available.

Children can choose to participate in programming and/or reading prizes.

Inter-church hymn sing set for June 6

?

An inter-church hymn sing is planned for at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 6, in the Hearth Room of the Hillsboro Mennonite Breth?ren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.

?Celebrating the Ministry of the Holy Spirit? will be the theme. The hymn sing led by Steve Vincent.

Those attending will have an opportunity to select favorite hymns.

Route 56 Car Show in Hillsboro June 12

?

The 12th annual Route 56 Classic Cruisers Car Show begins at 8 a.m. with registration at the Hillsboro Memorial Park.

The entry fee is $12, plus one can of food.

Entry money will go to the Marion County Toy Run and food donations will go to the Marion County Food Bank.

The awards ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Bake sale planned to help MB youth

?

The Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Youth are sponsoring a large benefit bake sale from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at the next Hillsboro Farmers? Market on the Schaeffler House grounds in Hillsboro.

All proceeds will go toward their mission trip expenses.

TOPS 2009 Queen to speak in Marion

?

Bonnie Voegeli of Valley Center, the 2009 Kansas queen, will be speaking to the TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) at group 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 7, in the basement of the Marion Family Physicians Clinic, 537 S. Freeborn St., Marion.

Voegeli, who lost 931?2 pounds, plans to talk about her success story. The presentation is open to anyone who wants to learn how to lose weight.
