Legislative coffee planned Feb. 27

Kansas Sen. Jim Barnett of Emporia and Rep. Robert Brookens of Marion will be at the Hillsboro City Building, 118 E. Grand, at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, for a legislative coffee.
?Come meet your legislators, have your concerns addressed, questions answered and find out about legislative issues,? one organizer said.
The event is being sponsored by the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce.

Free child screening set for March 9
?
Marion County Early Intervention Services will be offering a free screening for child?ren birth through 5 years old Tuesday, March 9, at the Marion Presbyterian Church at Lawrence and Elm streets in Marion.
Appointments will be available from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
At the screening, development will be checked in the learning, motor, language and social areas. Vision and hearing will also be screened. This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete.

Country Stitchers to meet March 1
?
The Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Hillsboro United Methodist Church, 905 East D St.
The program will be, ?What to do with scraps,? by the Quilting Bee of Salina. Fat quarter of the month is Irish on green fabric. Navy blocks for stencil designs will be the block of the month.

Wendy?s to raise funds for HHS choir
?
Wendy?s restaurant in Hillsboro will be hosting a community night Monday, March 1, to raise funds for the Hillsboro High School Concert Choir.
A percentage of profits made between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. will go toward the choir?s trip to Branson May 8-9. The choir will be performing at the ?Grand Old Gospel Hour Live!? at Dick Clark?s American Bandstand Theater during the Sunday morning service.
The choir will also attend the musical ?Noah,? receive a backstage tour of the special effects used for the performance, and attend a dinner performance of the a cappella group Six.

HES kindergarten screenings to start

Kindergarten screenings at Hillsboro Elementary School are scheduled Wednesday, March 31, and Thursday, April 1.
Children will need to be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31, 2010, to be eligible for kindergarten this fall.
Those with preschoolers, who will be eligible for kindergarten in 2010-11, are asked to call the elementary office at 947-3981 for more information.

MES kindergarten enrollment begins

Kindergarten enrollment and round-up evaluation is underway at USD 408-Marion-Florence. Children must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2010, in order to qualify for class this fall, said Deb Shipman at Marion Elementary School.
The kindergarten round-up evaluation is scheduled for Monday, March 22, at MES, 1400 E. Lawrence St.
Parents who would like to enroll their kindergartners in the fall must set up an appointment for the round-up by calling Shipman at 620-382-3771 or toll-free 800-498-2014. For more information, Shipman is also available to answer questions.

Cinderella?s Closet set for March 21
?
Hillsboro Mennonite Breth?ren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe, is hosting its third-annual Cinder?ella?s Closet from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 21, in the fellowship hall.
The event is open to any high school girl in Marion County who is attending prom this school year. Participants can select a prom dress and take it home at no charge.
Anyone who has a dress, jewelry or small clutch purse to donate can bring it to the church or call 620-947-3583 and leave a message where the items can be picked up.

Free tax help available in Marion

Marion County at Mid-Cap, 104 N. Fifth, Marion, is offering free assistance with basic tax returns as well as free e-filing.
To qualify for the program, your income must not exceed $35,000.

According to organizers, those who come for assistance should be sure to bring their Social Security card; this year?s tax package and/or label; all forms, W-2s and 1099s; information for all other income; information for all deductions or credits and a copy of last year?s tax return.

Peabody Legion plans annual event

Peabody American Legion will sponsor its annual Mountain Oyster Stag from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26.
The dinner is all-you-can-eat with sides included for $12.

Dance, aerobics class to begin soon

The Hillsboro Recreation Department is sponsoring a latin-themed dance aerobics class at 7:15 p.m. March 1 at the Hillsboro Elementary School gymnasium.

The Peabody Main Street Memorabilia Auction will begin with dinner at 6 p.m. with the auction beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Peabody American Legion.
All proceeds from the event will go toward Peabody Main Street projects.
