Seniors to honor county artists

Senior Citizens of Marion County Inc. invites the public to the organization?s 53rd annual meeting Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Marion Senior Center.

Registration will open at 11 a.m., followed by the Friendship Meal at noon and the program at 12:45 p.m.

The speaker will be Pat Wick, a local artist from Ramona. She will talk about the benefits of being an artist.

The SCMC board will then honor six county artists. Their work will be displayed at the meeting.

The offering this year will go toward a scholarship for a Marion County 2014 high school senior who plans to pursue a field related to aging, such as medicine, social work, therapy (physical, speech, occupational, recreational), gerontology or psychology.

To register for the event, contact the Marion County Department on Aging or your local senior center by Monday, Oct. 7. Cost is $5 per person.

Free screening in Marion Oct. 8

Marion County Early Intervention Services will provide a free screening for children birth through 5 years old Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Marion.

Appointments will be from 12:30-3 p.m. At the screening, development will be checked in the learning, motor, language and social areas. Vision and hearing also will be screened.

This process usually takes at least one hour for a child to complete. All children are welcome, but an appointment is necessary. To make one, call 620-382-2858.

HHS choir selling value cards

Hillsboro High School Concert Choir will sell value cards starting this week, with the current card expiring at the end of Sep?tember.

New cards, featuring discounts for the card-holder from area businesses, are good from Oct. 1 through March 31. Cards cost $10 and are being sold by choir members.

This fundraiser for the choir supports biennial trips to out-of-state competitions and performances. This year?s trip will be to Branson, Mo., where the choir will perform before the SIX concert, at The Grand Old Gospel Hour.

The participating businesses are Alco, Ampride, Dale?s Supermarket, Jan?s Floral Designs, Kessler Kreations, La Cabana, Little Pleasures, Nancy?s Fashions, Norel Farms Bakery, Odds N Ends, Rod?s Tire, Quick Flick, Tangles, The Cut Above, Serenity Gardens and Vogt?s HomeTown Market.

Community blood drive set Oct. 7

Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe, is hosting a community blood drive from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7.

Anyone interested in donating blood is encouraged to schedule an appointment by calling 800-733-2767 or go to redcrossblood.org.

Herb workshop Oct. 12 in Florence

An herb workshop will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, with Karyn Woodward facilitating the class at the Florence Community Garden and Villa on the Prairie.

The workshop will be on making soups and using herbs in the soups participants make.

The cost is $25. Anyone planning to attend must make a reservation by emailing Phoebe Janzen, one of the coordinators.
