Seniors to mark 50th year Oct. 21

The Senior Citizens of Marion County Inc. invites the public to join them in celebrating their formation of the organization 50 years ago.

The celebration is taking place Thursday, Oct. 21, at the Marion Senior Center. Regis?tration will begin at 11 a.m. The Friendship Meal will be served at noon and the program will begin at 12:45 p.m.

Speakers will be two former directors of the Marion County Department for Elderly, Joyce Clark and Noreen Weems. They will share their memories of working with the board in establishing programs for senior citizens in Marion County.

A slide presentation on the history of the organization will be part of the program.

The free-will offering this year will go toward establishing a scholarship for a Marion County 2011 high school senior who plans on going into a field related to aging, such as medicine; social work; therapies such as physical, speech, occupational and recreational; gerontology and psychology.

To register for the event, contact the Marion County Depart?ment on Aging or your local senior center. Cost of registration is $5 per person and the deadline is Friday, Oct. 15.

?Great Pumpkin Race? on Oct. 30

?

First Mennonite Church will sponsor the second annual ?The Great Pumpkin Race? Satur?day morning, Oct. 30.

The event includes a 5-kilometer run/walk at 9 a.m. and a kids? half-mile run/walk at 9:30 a.m.

Participants need to pregister by Oct. 20 to guarantee a long-sleeved T-shirt. The cost is $20 per entrant in the 5-K and $10 in the kids? run prior to Oct. 20. The cost on race day will be $25 and $15, respectively.

Runners also will receive baked pumpkin goodies and refreshments plus race awards. Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be awarded for the best entries.

Participants are encouraged to donate a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter or two canned goods on race day for the Marion County Food Bank.

Tampa Knights will sponsor breakfast

?

The Tampa Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a breakfast from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Tampa Senior Center.

The menu is scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, coffee and orange juice.

Donations will be welcomed.

CGHS pancake feed this Saturday

?

The Canton-Galva High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America will offer its annual pancake feed from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the high school cafeteria.

The meal includes all the pancakes you can eat, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice and coffee.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from high school students or upon arrival at the pancake feed. An adult ticket costs $5 and a ticket for children ages 10 and under is $3.

The event also will include a silent auction for food and crafts.

Proceeds will go toward sending students to the national FBLA fall leadership in Des Moines, Iowa, as well as other organization activities.

Farmerettes meet Oct. 8 in Hillsboro

?

The Farmerettes will meet at 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at Leona Koslow?sky?s home.

Roll call will be the last inspirational book read.

Edie Ollenburger will present the lesson with a book review.

County Democrats will met Oct. 9

?

Marion County Democrats will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at Marion County Lake Hall.

Candidates Alan Jilka and Jerry Karr will be speaking.

The agenda also includes a short reorganizational meeting, election of officers and appointment of precinct people.

All county Democrats are encouraged to attend. Only elected precinct people may vote during the business meeting.

Desert will be served.

Florence UMC plans open house

?

The Florence United Metho?dist Church is having an open house potluck meal from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10.

The public is invited to the event to see the recently renovated sanctuary and chancel.

Dedication Sunday will be Oct. 24. A brunch will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by a worship service at 11 a.m.

Community fishing event set Oct. 10

?

Hillsboro United Methodist Church is hosting a community family fishing event and barbecue starting at 3 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Memorial Park pond in Hillsboro.

Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served at 5 p.m.

Those planning to attend are asked to bring a desert or side dish to share.

A fishing license is required for people ages 16 and older. A one-day license can be purchased at the Alco store in Hillsboro.

Hillsboro book group meets Oct. 8

?

Hillsboro Public Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet at 9 a.m. Oct. 8 at Hillsboro Senior Center, which is a different location than normal.

The group will be discussing ?Walking Across Egypt? by Clyde Edgerton.

HRC offers class on pumpkin carving

?

The Hillsboro Recreation Commission is offering a pumpkin-carving class from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23.

Each participant will receive a pumpkin-carving kit along with several patterns to work with and a pumpkin to carve.

Participants will be given hints on carving and preserving pumpkins along with recipes for homemade pumpkin seeds.

The class is limited to the first 20 participants from third through sixth grade. Parents are invited to stay and help. The fee for the class is $10.
